JLo Honors Hero
SELF took a break from tracking Jennifer Lopez's triathlon training triumphs and caught up with her in Denver for a different sort of impressive undertaking. Yesterday, our 2008 Most Inspiring Woman hosted a reception to honor a woman who inspires her, Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children's Defense Fund. The event, cohosted by Capitol File magazine and Viacom (with a little help from SELF), paid tribute to Edelman for all the amazing work she's done on behalf of those who can't vote, lobby or speak for themselves.
The Denver Art Museum was buzzing with political stars and politically minded celebs in town for the Democratic National Convention. Everyone there was talking about how this was the most star-studded event of the week so far. We spotted New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson; Ken Salazar, senator from Colorado; Antonio Villaraigosa, mayor of Los Angeles; plus Angela Bassett, Connie Britton, Fran Drescher, Cameron Crowe, J.J. Abrams and more.
Jennifer was busy as host, but she of course stopped to talk to SELF about the event and what's next for her with her triathlon training (more swimming!). Everyone seemed so energetic and excited; you could feel the positive energy, which grew as Jennifer took the podium (looking incredible, with a new, blonder 'do, courtesy of the fabulous Ken Paves) to introduce Edelman.
Jennifer talked about the work Edelman has done and what an inspiration she's been now that Jennifer herself is more involved in philanthropic projects. (Aside from partnering with SELF to raise money for Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, which you've been reading about on this blog, she's in the process of starting her own foundation!)
"After the birth of my children, I felt even stronger about making a difference. If I had a dollar for everyone who told me, 'Jennifer, don't start your own foundation, it will be such a headache,' I could have provided health care for all the children in the country," she said.
But all the obstacles have only strengthened her resolve to follow Edelman's example, she added. If the dedication she puts into triathlon training and raising money for the hospital is any indication, we know Jennifer's foundation will be a huge success.

At Jennifer Lopez Event, Rufus Wainwright Muses On Gay Politics
DENVER—Wednesday afternoon at the Denver Art Museum, Jennifer Lopez, Capitol File and Viacom honored Marian Wright Edelman for her work with the Children's Defense Fund. Before the awards presentation began, the Daily Transom spied the singer Rufus Wainwright, wearing a plaid blazer, striped T-shirt and sandals.
"I'm gay and out and proud, but in saying that I feel that the gay community could be a little more engaged," Mr. Wainwright said. "You can even spell it out. E-N-G-A-Y." Har!
"I guess one of the reasons I'm so vocal is to get some of my community out there because especially gay men-and those are the only ones I can really speak for-they tend to get a little into the lush life and the dance, the DJs, the disco music, and it's fun and everything, but unfortunately I'm a huge pessimist right now. And I can't dance that off," said Mr. Wainwright, dejectedly.
The actress Fran Drescher interrupted Mr. Wainwright's speech to tell him that his boyfriend is "so cute. I hope he has a straight brother!"
According to Mr. Wainwright, it was the agitation for gay rights that helped bring down John Kerry. "I think we're a little wiser now and we realize we're going to have to play ball a bit in terms of those issues," he said. "Which is unfortunate and depressing but it's also just reality."
As for whether he was interested in dipping into the lush life himself, he said, "No, no. I'm just following hors d'oeuvres around! I feel like a grazing cattle." The evening before, he had performed at the Equality Rocks event with Melissa Etheridge.
The Daily Transom noted that the Hollywood effect that also didn't do well by John Kerry. "I think it really depends on the celebrity," said Mr. Wainwright. "I think what Madonna did was ridiculous and really atrocious, and was just such bad timing," he said, referring to the video she has been showing on her latest tour comparing John McCain to Hitler and Barack Obama to Gandhi. "It's just so, so dumb."
Then Angela Bassett said she thinks it's the perfect time for a black man to be president.
Colorado Senator Ken Salazar, who was wearing an enormous cowboy hat, introduced Ms. Lopez, who was wearing conservative, rather Laura Bush-like red outfit. Mr. Salazar congratulated her on all her accomplishments, especially being mother of twins; Ms. Lopez then took the stage to introduce Ms. Edelman. "If I had a dollar for every person who told me not to get involved with charity, I could provide health care for all the children in the country," Ms. Lopez said. "That illustrated that gee, maybe this country does need a change."
Chante Moore: I Should Have Battled Jennifer Lopez!
By Jawn Murray, Chante Moore/Jennifer Lopez
Sultry R&B singer Chante Moore told NPR's Tony Cox that her biggest professional regret was not going toe-to-toe with Jennifer Lopez back in 1999 when her junior album, 'This Moment Is Mine' came out one week prior to J.Lo's 'On The 6.'
The San Francisco-bred singer recalled how when she realized that über-producer Rodney Jerkins (Michael Jackson/Brandy) had basically created the same song for her and J.Lo, she wanted to "sock [him] in the head."
The song Moore is referencing is 'If I Gave Love,' a track that was slated to be the follow-up release to Moore 's smash single, 'Chante's Got A Man.'
"We should have been aggressive instead of backing off our single," vented Moore. "And we backed off of it because J.Lo had such a machine at the time. We should have just stepped out."
According to the 41-year-old singer, Jerkins' similar version of 'If I Gave Love' that was re-titled 'If You Had My Love' for Lopez was created because Sean 'P.Diddy' Combs specifically requested the song.
"I heard that it was because Puff Daddy walked in and heard my song and said, 'I want that song.' [Rodney] was like, 'Yeah, it's already taken. We wrote that for Sean Chante.' And [Puffy] was like, 'Yeah, mmm hmm, I want that song.' So Rodney wrote really the same song," the singer explained, before adding: "Hers, I can't even remember. It's so close I can't even sing it right now. Same song!"
Now Moore, who is married to R&B crooner Kenny Lattimore, has released a new album 'Love The Woman' on Peak Records/Concord.
The first single from that offering is 'It Aint Supposed To Be This Way,' a song that has a title that accurately describes how Moore was feeling upon discovering what happened to her back in 1999.

At SELF, deprivation is a four-letter word. We believe that if you let yourself indulge occasionally in special foods or treats, it keeps you from overindulging later. Jennifer Lopez subscribes to that philosophy, too; she doesn't deny or starve herself, and she doesn't have to now that she's torching tons of extra calories training for a triathlon. (She's doing it for charity! If you want to help, click the "donate" photo below.) But she has learned some lessons about her diet.
"The one thing I'm getting in order is my eating. I've been thinking about that a lot now that I've started going longer distances. I'm not eating terrible foods, but I need more energy. The other day I ate Chinese food, then did a mini, mock tri: a swim, then a bike and a run. I could feel the heavy, greasy food slooowwwing me down. By the end of the workout, I was thinking to myself, If I ate better, I'd feel better about now and I'd have more energy. So now I'm working on getting on a good, healthy diet. Today I had a banana before my workout."
Just as she and her husband are raising their twins sans nanny, Jennifer doesn't have a personal chef or nutritionist whipping up low-cal power meals for her. She's learning on her own, just like the rest of us, that easily digestible proteins and carbs like chicken and pasta and fruit and veggies give the fuel you need to feel good throughout an entire workout.
She's got another incentive to eat well, too. "I want to teach [twins Max and Emme] that there are healthy things that taste good. Growing up, I didn't eat vegetables. I didn't know there was brown bread. I'd eat a sugar doughnut, then go to school totally sugar-buzzed. We'd eat hamburgers for lunch, then rice and beans and meat for dinner. Rice and beans aren't bad, but the meat was always fried. Culturally, that's just what my mom was fed and so she fed it to us. I want to give my kids the healthy stuff early so they can build on it—then have little treats."
