Etsy Holiday 2010 Edition, Part 3: Miscellaneous

Part 1: Intro + Skincare/Bath Products
Part 2: Jewelry

Here's the last part of this year's Etsy Holiday 2010 Edition Mini-series!  I planned on getting all these up before Christmas, but as usual, I'm cutting it a little close ^_^  If you order from any of these shops, they sadly will not arrive in time for Christmas, but at least you'll know about these amazing shops for when the next gift-giving occasion comes up! This post will be a real mashup of various things, from pillows to macarons....so enjoy!

Etsy: VintageJamie

Yes, pillows. I love pillows. I own too many of them :\ The ironic thing is that I don't even sleep with a pillow >< I just really like them.  VintageJamie is known for her Map pillows but I personally like her Orientalism pillows, which are inspired by hanboks and kimonos.    She also makes pillows with pouches and little cross designs.  Overall, I like the simplicity and classiness of her designs.  Her fabrics are understated but sophisticated and hit the fine line between being beautiful yet not "uncomfortable" looking. You can actually use these pillows and there's nothing better than something that is both functional and pretty :)

I ordered the most embarrassingly Korean pillow ever for my dad for Christmas last year (it's pretty much ended up as mine though eheh) xD  And the fabric quality and stitching was perfect.  Every seam is precise and tight.  No loose threads, no holes, no stains.  The fabric quality was weighty and the pattern edges were perfectly aligned.  The zipper on the side (so you can wash the cover), is practically invisible.  Simply superb craftsmanship.  The pillow I got was 18x18in.  It's a very good sized, perfect for display and use.  I would love to decorate my whole house with her pretty pillows.  Her large 24x24in pillows would particularly make great lounging pillows - when I own my own house I'm going to be hauling at least two of them. She "models" a few of her pillows with her kids to give a size reference and they just look so at home.

Cons are that she is expensive if you just want a regular pillow.  I paid $35 for both the cover and the pillow fluff (18x18), this price included shipping.  I personally didn't regret it but it is certainly one of the more frivolous purchases I've made.  For a decorative pillow, however, I think the cost is very fair. If you go to places like Bath & Beyond, you'll see that large decorative pillows generally run over $20 - and many of those can't be unzipped and washed.  Also, in my opinion these kinds of pillows tend to be made from really impractical, uncomfortable materials (gauze, glitters, tassels etc) making them downright nothing but decorative. VintageJamie's pillows hit the balance between decorative yet functional.   I think these would make a great housewarming gift actually ^_^

Jamie ships from Seoul, Korea and even though it's a pillow, she shipped the damn thing in a box filled with peanuts and wrapped in bubblewrap O_O She also included a large, beautiful handmade Christmas card.  She did not sign it so *ahem* I actually used it again since it was too good to waste ^_^;;

Etsy: Kukubee
Official website: www.kukubee.com

Patikym of HerroHachi (home of many-a quirky, snarky T-shirt) introduced me to this Etsy shop and I'm so glad she did! I was totally enamored with their very unique, slightly off-kilter yet incredibly charming printed designs.  Sadly, Kukubee just closed their Etsy shop for the holidays - right before I was going to order a sushi pouch too :(!  Not many pouch styles are available, they only offer pencil and coin pouches.   Call me crazy but I would so buy a makeup pouch with the sushi design.  Or a laptop pouch.  Omg, a padded laptop pouch would just kill me (and yes, I'm one of those people that lugs around her MacBook wrapped in a sweatshirt hoping not to drop it).  The prices are all very reasonable indeed, $12 for pencil pouches and $8 for coin pouches.  Since I have not purchased from this shop before, I can't comment on their services and packaging but I will say I'm going to snagging one of their sushi pencil cases as soon as they open after the holidays!

Etsy: Lunatiger

Known for her beautiful origami rose bouquets but she also makes a lot of adorable Swarovski charms. I have not purchased from her yet but I exchanged a lot of emails with her last year because I was thinking of purchasing a bouquet for Mother's Day.  A few reviews stated that the bouquets are a lot smaller than expected, but I suppose that's to be expected considering that these are origami.  Anyway, her bouquets look like they would just make wonderful Mother's Day or Valentine's Day gifts :)  I also know they do a ton of bridal bouquets, which I think is a great idea since you would be left with a beautiful memento :)

Etsy: Sparkles Kitchen

Lisa introduced me to this site and omg, I've been drooling over them ever since!  They look SO good and I have never seen such perfectly shaped macarons before.  This shop only sells macarons - a telltale sign of confidence in their product - and the 199/200 positive ratings pretty much speaks for itself.  They offer a lot of different intriguing flavors and it kind of pisses me off that they make if hard (ir not impossible), to try one of each all at once.  I have not purchased from this shop, but Lisa vouches for their deliciousness and being that Lisa is something a macaron-maker herself, I'm sure these little puppies are worth trying~

And on that note~
I hope you enjoyed this year's Etsy Holiday/Shopping Guide mini-series!  I've already come across quite a few more Etsy shops that I am lemming over, but I will introduce them to you another time :)

Etsy Holiday 2010 Edition, Part 2: Jewelry

I will posting a massive post later tonight of Black Friday/Cyber Monday Sales I will be stalking (I'm still compiling them right now....god I love Thanksgiving break). So, stay tuned for that!  Thanksgiving then Black Friday, it's gonna be a good weekend -- w00t!  And my face is recovering nicely *whew* my face is flaky and dry but no longer the size of a melon ^_^  Thanks for all your kind words peeps :D

Etsy Holiday 2010 Edition Mini-series
Part 1: Intro + Skincare/Bath Products

Here's Part 2 of the Etsy Holiday 2010 Edition mini-series!  If you read my blog you'll know I'm just obsessed with earrings and Swarovski crystals.  I hoard jewelry like crazy >_> it's my weakness, moreso than makeup actually :( With makeup I can usually talk myself out of it and I tend to buy only exactly what I am looking for but...jewelry...no restraint whatsoever.

Etsy: Happy Cloud Moments
Etsy Supplies Shop: Happy Cloud Supplies
Blog: http://happycloudmoments.blogspot.com
Happily Handmade Swarovksi Crystal Jewelry....
Happy Cloud Moments presents happily handmade jewelry featuring Swarovski Elements such as crystals and pearls and sterling silver components. The general style is simple, romantic, feminine and just so sparkly. Of course, there are the bold and fun pieces too. I can customize the jewelry to fit you or create a piece from scratch just for you.
Happy Cloud Moments is without question my favorite Etsy Swarovski jewelry shop.  I have purchased a lot of stuff from her (I really should do a separate post on my HCM stuff) ^_^ Her whimsical style just strokes me exactly the right way...  She's been cranking out a lot of adorable autumn inspired pieces lately (I so dig the little autumn leaf and acorn charms) but she is known for her simple star earrings and star necklaces.  Overall, the packaging and the quality of her jewelry is just impeccable. There's breathtaking attention to details:

- always wire wraps bicones around the clasp to make it prettier (her trademark I think)
- wire wraps all the beads on her cluster earrings and bracelets
- puts wire wrapped beads on the ends of all her bracelets to finish them off

The fact that she actually wire-wraps ALL the beads on her bracelets just boggles my mind - it really is amazing when you consider how many beads go into a single bracelet.  Wire wrapping is much more labor intensive than just putting the bead on the chain with a single loop or using a jump ring (a metal circle).  Those semi into jewelry know what I'm talking about ^_~  Anyway, it takes skill and time to make tight wire wraps on each bead and major props to jewelry makers who do that.  Those twists ensure the bead is securely on the chain and it just demonstrates the jewelry artisan's dedication to jewelry making as a craft, not just as a money maker.

She also includes little freebies with jewelry purchases and everything comes in boxes with business cards.  I've also purchased Strawberry Brass & Enamel Bells and a Glow-In-the-Dark Stars (LOVE) from her supplies shop, Happy Cloud Supplies ^_^ I use them on my cellphone - I like the jangling ^^

Joyce is also having a 20% off Black Friday Sale right now so you definitely should buy something now if you see something you like!

Coupon expires November 26, 2010 11:59pm (EST I assume).

Etsy: beadpassion
Welcome to my shop! I'm a stay at home mother. I got hold of my first polymer clay few years back and instantly fell in love with it. Polymer clay allows one to explore his creative side with the independence of customizing desired items.
This was where I made my very first Etsy purchase actually ^_^  I own a chocolate, a donut and vintage pearl bracelet - one of her few non-food items ^.~.  I love them all - her polymer goodies are just mind bogglingly detailed and look so delicious!  She's known for her exquisitely detailed sushi and cupcakes but she takes custom orders too.  She actually made a customized miniature of my friend's wedding cake: the 2-layer cake was on a necklace, one slice for an earring and a fork for the other earrings.  It's a bit impractical as far as jewelry goes (cuz it's kiddish) but very memorable and a good keepsake (if I do say so myself ^^).   I'll have to show you guys my bracelets one day, they're just amazingly cute and when I wear them everybody wants a bite (literally).

For those unfamiliar with polymer clay, it's surprisingly sturdy. I wouldn't say her pieces are "fragile" at all, they're hard, shiny - unless you request no coating - and have none of the squishy/pliable characteristics you associate with "clay."  While they can chip (it's hard to chip them though, trust me), since the color is not painted on (as in each colored bit is a piece of clay colored in itself), no white will show in the chip.  The style of jewelry could be seen as childish but I love wearing them because they're great conversation starters and just so cute.  I am just lusting after her California Maki Sushi studs.

The customer service is great and she includes freebies.  Packaging is pretty good, you can tell she tries but since she is based in Philippines, shipping to the US can take awhile and the box she sends things in can end up a little beat up.   But you can tell that's really the post offices' fault, not hers.

Etsy: Serenity Crystal Design

I remember coming across Trinity's Etsy page about a year ago, back then she only had a few Swarovksi pendant necklaces.  I purchased a simple pendant from her and I recall the service being quite good.  Then months later -  I come across her page again and omg, she's come a long way since then!  Her specialties are now beautiful handmade flower hair accessories but the real jewel in her shop is her gorgeous free-form turquoise necklace, inspired by Megan Fox.  It is just BEAUTIFUL and so fashionable, especially considering how chunky jewelry is in right now.  Not to mention I think this would just look amazing during the summer with a strapless dress.  Her Etsy feedback is perfect so it seems like her service quality is still impeccable.  Also for $40+ purchases she includes a 1 year free magazine subscription and free crystal earrings~ I am so lemming that Megan Fox necklace right now ><!

Etsy: Youniquely Chic

Captive Teardrops and Rainbow Swarovski Cascade but they are eye-catching in their own way.  Her jewelry has a steampunk vibe without being too crazy and I love how she incorporates crystals into the "machinery."  I like her gunmetal pieces especially, I kind of wish more people worked with gunmetal :( It doesn't tarnish like sterling silver (at least the ones I own for 1+ year hasn't) and while it doesn't look as "expensive" it has a sleek edge to it that I really like.  She holds a lot go Buy One, Get One Free sales - one every holiday - so those are the best time to pick up a few earrings :)

Packaging isn't amazing though, just adequate.  If you want to give these as a gift, send it to yourself first ^^;; Tara is very nice though and she ships very promptly.

Etsy: Candybead

Uh, who doesn't know Candybead?  Pretty much the Swarovksi bicone beader on the net xD She's known for her bicone bracelets mostly but her Hello Kitty charms are super cute too.  I haven't bought anything from her before but I have been lemming over over her twisted spiral bracelets so long I just wanted to share this shop with you all ^_^.

Etsy: made with molecules

I have not bought anything from this shop but it's just too good to not include in this post because it's so ridiculously nerdy xD  Oh orgo... how I did love drawing my benzene molecules "just right"...sadly, the only thing I gained from that class is that I can now draw perfect hexagons ;)   Anyway, this shop is pretty darn famous online so I'm certain it can be trusted and the quality is good, even if I haven't seen it myself.  These would make a perfect gift for those who love science - or don't ;)  Have a friend who hated orgo, genetics or molecular bio? Why not tease 'em just a bit with some jewelry that is sure to evoke some "fond" memories?  The shop carries cellphone charms, necklaces, earrings, amino acids, base pairs and a lot of molecules that I needed to remember (but never did) for my molecular genetics exams *sigh*

Part 3 coming up next week ^_^!  If you have any favorite Etsy shops - let me know so I can check 'em out!

Etsy Holiday 2010 Edition, Part 1: Intro + Skincare/Bath Products

Since the holidays are around the corner, I can finally post my Etsy Holiday 2010 Edition mini-series on some of my favorite Etsy stores!  As much as I like receiving gifts, I also really like buying gifts as well - I love picking out 'just the right thing' for loved ones ^_^ And Etsy is filled to the brim with wonderful handmade, unique items so I thought I might just share some of my favorite shops with you.  There's nothing better than a gift that was not only selected with love but also made with love (if you can't make it yourself ^^).  On top of that it's just great supporting artisans who make quality handmade goodies, especially during the holidays ^^ What better way to spread the cheer?

This will be a three part series:
1.) Skincare/bath products (this post)
2.) Jewelry
3.) Miscellaneous

It's just good to start shopping early before the rush begins~ So I hope you enjoy this mini-series and find something for everyone (including yourself) ^_^  I'll be doing mini-reviews on the products I've tried to give you an idea of what I like from each shop.  Fyi, everything I review is something I have personally purchased with my own money, so you can take it from me that it's worth giving these shops a try.

Skincare & Bath Products

Etsy: DressGreen
Welcome to DressGreen! Here you will find high quality, safe products to enhance and restore even the most sensitive & unruly skin. What you won’t find are petroleum products, parabens, phthalates, silicone-derived products, nor sulfates. DressGreen products are always made fresh from scratch, never from a base!
This is one of my favorite skincare shops on Etsy.  I love the eco-friendly packing, the free samples, the light natural scents and how they list all the ingredients on each page.  This way you can actually track what you are putting on your face - this is what drew me to DressGreen in the first place.

When my skin had a severe allergic reaction to Benzoyl Peroxide a few years ago (as in I had 3rd degree burns), I was afraid to put almost everything on my face because at the time I wasn't sure what I was reacting to.  I also threw out all my lotions and makeup (since the derm indicated it might be contagious/bacteria related >_>) just to be sure and stopped using EVERYTHING (no lotions, makeup, scrubs) for about six months.  But during that time I didn't want my skin to become dry since that would worsen scarring so I started poking around for some essential oils.

I've tried the Purifying & Blemish Control Serum (Tea Tree Oil, Clary Sage & Lemon) and Smoothing and Reparative Facial Serum (Avocado, Evening Primrose & Rosehip Oils).  Both of these serums are lovely, Purifying has a gentle lemon scent and the other a subtle tangerine scent.  The Purifying one is my favorite and when I was still recovering I would dab this on my face everyday.
Ingredients (1oz): Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Peel Oil, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil , Salvia Sclarea (Clary Sage) Oil, Tocopherol (Vitamin E)
*a vegan product, free of artificial colors, fragrances, & preservatives; and free of petroleum products.
I know that you can buy essential oils and mix it yourself but I think it's a great deal just to be able to buy a little bottle with this variety of wholesome essential oils already packed in.  Now that my skin is back to its normal acne-prone self I use this only at night on "very dry" days for an intense hydrating treatment and to wipe down my face when I have a lot of makeup on (then I take a shower or rinse so I won't have too much oil on my face).    I'm very acne prone and this stuff never ever broke me out and I really do think it helped prevent a lot of scarring considering what my face went through.  I would gently bathe my face in hot water with a wash cloth to loosen scabs then put on the oil and go to sleep.  In the morning there was a light sheen of oil but most of it had soaked into my skin (it couldn't soak in all the way at the time because my skin had so many scabs).  Once I wiped off the excess oil my skin was unbelievably hydrated and soft.  To this day, this serum still works like a charm on me.

I also really recommend the Clarifying Activated Charcoal Soap.  Charcoal is really good for the skin as it draws out impurities; I used this after the lesions on my face had closed.  It actually smells of charcoal (be careful you rinse your face fully or you'll leave ash streaks on your towel ^^) and I can feel the cleanliness of my face after I use it.  It's a tad on drying side since the charcoal literally soaks up sebum and impurities so moisturize afterwards.  But I love this soap and I actually still use this during the summer because it really helps control oil.

The one thing I do not recommend from this shop are the lip lushes (not the balms).  I tried the Lusty Lip Lush and it smells great, is super moisturizing, slick and leaves a gorgeous shine....but it melts way too easily and becomes a little granulated, still usable but not fond of the texture :\  There are a lot of other better things in this shop to try anyway.   I highly recommend this shop for people with sensitive skin who need to carefully track what they are putting on their face.

Laura is super nice so there's excellent customer service and fast shipping.  The packaging is eco-friendly and simple and she always includes free samples.  I'm just so crazy about this shop!  DressGreen also offers bar shampoos, face masks, shaving bars, butter creams, perfumes and lip balms.

Etsy: Sunbasilgarden Soaps
Blog: http://www.sunbasilgarden.blogspot.com/
Handcrafted soaps designed to bring a smile to your face and leave your skin feeling juicy clean. Made with top of the line, all natural, quality ingredients.  Many of my soaps are inlayed using clean lines and whimsical shapes all made from soap. I love this process as the design lasts all the way down to the last piece. Use them in the shower, by the sink and for the ultimate unique gift.
Hands down the cutest soaps ever!  Her soap designs are always changing - lots of seasonal and thematic soaps.  I've bought at least 3 bars of soap from her and actually used them (even though I rarely use body bar soap) because they smell so good and are just FUN - they really make me smile.  Her soaps are all natural and even if they don't have "a lot" of ingredients, glycerin is very gentle and moisturizing.  Plus the scents of her soap are friggin amazing (and accurate...her food soaps speak for themselves)!  They're surprisingly not strongly scented despite their fancy designs ^^ and because of the generous amount of glycerin, these soaps are very slippery (always popping out of my hands ehhe) and moisturizing without being oily.  Of the soaps I've tried my favorite is actually the Rainbow Brite Ruffle soap in Kumquat (I think the scent is OOS right now). It's a tangerine-orange scent and the colors are just so happy :D!

What I really like about her soaps is that the designs "stay" until the last lather since she inlays her designs.  A slight con could be there aren't many "enriching" ingredients in her soaps like say, DressGreen but Sunbasilsoaps doesn't advertise otherwise - the fun cheerfulness of their soaps are obviously their selling point.  Her soaps are still natural and quite simple ingredient-wise so I respect that.  Also another small con is that since her soaps are mostly glycerin, water does wear them down really fast - make sure you keep it out of running water and give it time to dry out to make the bar last.  I think they'd be too drying for winter but the loofah and salt bars would be perfect for summer since you can have soap + exfoliator in one AND can carry it on the plane for vacations.  Likewise, I think her soaps make nice gifts, especially for those with a sense of humor :)

I love the vibe of her shop and her attitude - great customer service and shipping was fast :) She always seems so happy, unsurprising when you look at her shop I guess ^^ Also offers whipped soaps, bath bombs, sugar scrubs and lotion.  I haven't tried anything but the bar soaps but the bath bombs look amazing!

Etsy: Theragenics
Blog: http://theraganics.blogspot.com
Website: http://www.theraganics.com

Doesn't carry many products and I think that shows how she chooses to perfect and specialize instead of having a huge range of mediocre stuff.  I discovered Stephanie when I was looking around for bath bombs.  She was just starting out on Etsy but I was drawn by her story of her skin history (read it on her Etsy profile).  She was only selling bath bombs at the time so I figured I would try those for fun and see how I react to it.  I got the lavender and calendula mini bath bombs and I was pleased enough to go back and purchase the big rose scented bath bomb and Lavender Fields soap.  The lavender soap smells amazing by the way.  If you like lavender this is a must-buy.  My mom keeps a piece of this soap by her bed because it calms her and helps her sleep.  The soap isn't strongly scented but somehow the scent is just so pure it lasts and lingers.   Since my mom liked the lavender soap so much I bought the Carrot Tomato Soap.

...and I highly recommend it!  This is the soap I use daily in the Fall/Winter (the DressGreen Charcoal is only for summer).  I always end up going back to this; sometimes I stop using it for a few weeks while I'm trying something else out but I always end up breaking out.  It does not remove makeup but this is what I use after makeup remover.
This fusion is a match made in heaven! Made with organic tomato puree and organic carrot juice, the smell is naturally reminiscent of a fresh garden.  The use of tomato for skin care is ideal because of its cooling and astringent properties. It is rich in vitamin C making it helpful for acne and brightening dull skin and contains vitamin A needed for building healthy skin. Its naturally acidic properties help it balance the skin and get rid of excessive oil. The lycopene they contain are anti-oxidant in nature. Beta carotene (from carrots) helps improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as heal acne lesions.
It smells a little odd odd, like a spicy tomato - so it takes some getting used too.  But it really works well on me.  It calms my acne and helps control oil without drying me out.  Also this soap lasts forever; when I bought it I cut it into 3 pieces and I am still using the 2nd piece (I bought this in April, didn't use in July/Aug then started again in Sept).  It dries out quickly so it doesn't "melt away" and even though it feels "hard," it lathers up really well.  This is what I really like about this soap - it lathers up super well without wasting too much soap. I really want to try her Lavender Mint lotion bar but I want to wait on ordering till I finish this soap (which is taking forever ~_~).

My only complaint is that I wish she listed all her ingredients on her website.  However, she sent a handwritten ingredients list the last time I purchased from her. She also uses super eco-friendly packaging and includes free samples.  The shop carries bath bombs, bar soaps, bath salts and a few other things.

 Etsy: SkinJourney
We don’t believe in sacrificing your skin by using cheap fillers often found in commercial products. We use quality ingredients that sooth, condition, and repair your skin. We carefully select all of our ingredients for their unique properties using only the purest ingredients to create our advanced formulas.

We have incorporated luxurious vitamin rich ingredients like Avocado, Jojoba oil, and Shea Butter. We use a cocktail of natural plant extracts including Chamomile, Calendula & Lavender. We also use a blend of five fruits extracts (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) to gentle buff away dead skin. Anti-oxidants like Green Tea and White Peony Tea fight against free radicals which can damage the skin. These are just a few of our key ingredients that makes our skin care line exceptional. Skin Journey has created a diverse range of natural skin care products that are suitable for all skin types.
I really like the professional pictures and how they list the full ingredients on every page.  Everything is just really well-thought out and I like their philosophy of how they believe taking care of you skin is like a journey ^_^  I can't vouch for everything in the store really because I have actually only bought one thing but I love it so much I want to share it with you.  It is the Microdermabrasion Facial Scrub/Polish.  I have used 2 jars of this so far and just started my third jar.  Since I have a lot of rough skin/textured scars, exfoliating is really important to me.  However, scrubs like the St. Ives Apricot Scrub were way too harsh; they reddened my skin and it actually hurt me a bit.   I'm still exploring Vitamin C and lactic acid peels but I haven't come across when I like yet (tho I am so lemming the Philosophy Microdelivery Peel Set).

Meanwhile, this is my exfoliater of choice - this scrub is a perfect balance between a manual scrub and chemical peel to me.  The exfoliating power comes from Microdermabrasion Crystals, the same crystals used in spas and salons for those expensive facial treatments. Now it is brought to you in a cream base formula so it is not too harsh on your skin.   It feels like powdery sand - if you've been to Daytona Beach, the powder fine sand is what it feels like; it's really very, very gentle.    It's also full of healthy (and rather unusual) ingredients to find in a scrub like AHA, glycerin, jojoba oil etc.  It does have some preservatives in it (check the ingredients list) so if you're sensitive to that, double check.  But honestly, you'll be hard pressed to find any facial scrub without preservatives in it (they put preservatives in to keep the scrub from going bad since you usually scoop it out with wet hands). This is unscented there are also little tiny pink extra exfoliating? beads.

Good communication and customer service.  Once the jar's lid cracked a little in transit and when I told her, SkinJourney sent me a new jar totally free of charge.  Like I said, I don't know about the other products but this is my HG exfoliator and until I get to try the Philosophy Microdelivery, it probably will stay that way.  SkinJourney carries a lot of items from body scrubs to serums.
